Electrical Update and Impact on Library Square

Library visitors over the last few weeks have seen a transformation in Library Square, the park to the north of the library, from construction zone back to the park's natural beautiful state. A significant amount of work took place to open up the ground in Library Square to place the electrical framework for the new city complex. Most of the digging has now been completed and the grass has been seeded in selected areas. Further work on the grass areas will take place this fall by the City's Park and Forestry Department. For now, the electrical work has moved into the library and library patrons can expect to hear the sounds of progress from our electrical crew during your library visits. Our electrical crew is doing their best to keep the noise down and minimize the impact on library services when possible. However, it has been determined that the Library will have to close for approximately a week when the library switches over to their new electrical service in early August. The exact closure dates are still to be determined and will be shared with the public shortly.

Electrical Work

What is Going on Behind that Barricade?

In preparation for the library's renovation project the electrical system was analyzed. It was determined that the electrical frame work must be updated before significant construction can take place. The current electrical system is over 50 years old and much of the frame work is being replaced. At the same time we will move the electrical system underground which will make Library Square a much more attractive area. The new electrical system will also address the needs of the other buildings in the new City Complex. The new electrical system will service both the new City Hall and the police station. Due to this electrical update the library will be closed for a few days in late July. More details on the dates of closure will be available as this project moves further along. This investment will allow the library and eventually the new City Complex buildings to run much more efficiently. Once the electrical system is updated renovation will take place along Maumee Street.

Coffee Shop Update

The location for the proposed coffee shop at the Adrian Public Library is on the east side of the new front doors along Maumee Street. It is located on the main floor of the library and will have a separate entrance that will allow customers to enter and exit directly into the coffee shop. With this design the coffee shop will be able to open during the early morning hours when we most need a cup of coffee! Once the library opens at 10 a.m. you can easily move between the coffee shop and the library via an entrance directly into the library from the coffee shop. The City of Adrian will be releasing requests for proposals or qualifications for potential coffee shop vendors later this year. If you have an interest please be sure to visit the city's web site at http://www.ci.adrian.mi.us/ or this spot for the details. The coffee shop area is approximately 470 square feet on the main floor and there will be extensive storage space for the coffee shop vendor in the library.

Expanded Teen Area

As part of the library's expansion we will be opening an exciting new area for teens. The new teen area will be 35 feet wide by up to 20 feet deep and is located on the southwest corner of the library of the main floor. It will offer three computers devoted to just teen use as well as teen fiction, nonfiction and graphic novels. This is an area that teens can call their own! In fact, the mayor's youth council and the library's volunteens will help in the design of the teen room.

New Mezzanine Area

This project will open up a previously covered staff area that will become our new mezzanine. This area will have comfortable seating, allow you to look down into the main section of the library, wireless Internet access, and you can even bring a coffee up from our new coffee shop to this area to enjoy while you are reading or studying. It will be located on the south side of the library immediately above the coffee shop and teen room. Please stop by the library to look at the floor plans for this area.
