MaumeeSide Moving Forward

Significant changes are taking place on the Maumee Street facade of the library! New block has been placed to create the exterior wall for the coffee shop and teen area. If you look carefully through the construction scaffolding you can even see the shapes of the windows on the new mezzanine level as well as the windows in the coffee shop and teen room below. These upgrades will bring much needed natural light into the building and offer energy efficiencies. Very soon the brick and stone work will start on our south entrance. In fact the pallets of bricks have been delivered and are located all around the library. Check out the beautiful red brick that will soon adorn the library's exterior.

Progress on south and north side renovations

Placement of steel for the support columns on the south side of the library is moving forward now that water suppression is under control. Steel was delivered today and the poles are being placed in their proper locations. Soon masonry work will begin and you will start to see the new footprint of the coffee shop and teen room emerge.

On the north side of the building demo work continues in the elevator pit and water suppression will start to be addressed this week. T. J. Roofing will be on site soon to open up the library's roof to make room for the new elevator once the demo work is completed by Kreighoff-Lenawee .

Monumental Day at the Library

Heavy construction is now taking place on all four sides of the library as of today (April 16, 2009). The insulation (EFIS) covering all four sides of the building is being removed to address the water issues the library is facing. It will be replaced by 8 feet of brick along the base of the building's north, east and west walls. Above the brick on these walls will be placement of new EFIS to water proof the building. The front of the building on Maumee is being removed to make room for the new facade which will feature brick and stone from the sidewalk to the concrete cap above the front doors.

The new elevator arrived today and it was pretty amazing to watch that being delivered. Our current elevator will be down for about two months during the elevator replacement. Please pardon the equipment located on the main floor of the library as work is taking place to remove the old elevator and prepare for the installation of the new elevator. If you need assistance to access materials located on the youth floor please let any employee know and we would be pleased to assist you.

Moving Forward with New Design Plans

On Monday, March 16 the City Commission approved our new design plans to replace the facade on all four sides of the library. The facade is being replaced due to ongoing water issues the library has been facing. The new design was created by architect Todd Seidell to compliment the other buildings in the city complex on Maumee Street. Construction will take place by early April.

Renovation Update

We are moving forward with our renovation as you can see from the truck out front. The City's DPW (Department of Public Works) will be here for a week or so doing demo work in the south mezzanine area. They are preparing that area for renovation by knocking down the walls in the mezzanine area on the south side of the building. DPW is sending the debris from the demo work down a chute from the mezzanine to a truck out front. This area will become a new casual use area for the library. Library visitors will be welcome to sit in this area to read or study and encouraged to bring their laptops to use with the library's public wireless network.

It is expected to be out of service for at least a month. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause. Please contact a staff member if you need assistance and we will be pleased to help you.
